Jean Toomer

(1894-1967) Poet, novelist. “descended from a mixture…Scotch, Welsh, German,…and some dark blood” Jean Toomer wrote “Cane” (1923) a three part novel seen as ground-breaking and the start-off point for the Harlem Renaissance. He lived in New Rochelle and Harlem, New York City at different times in his life.

Luis Llorens Torres

(1876-1944) Poet, editor. Luis Llorens Torres was born in Puerto Rico. He founded “Antilles Journal” in Puerto Rico. He was an acclaimed poet, and he died in New York City.

Ida M Tarbell

(1857-1944) Writer. “History of the Standard Oil Company” (1904), lived at 38-44 9th Street, Greenwich Village.

Dylan Thomas

(1914-1953) Poet. Dylan Thomas stayed at the Hotel Chelsea, in 1953, and when taken ill with alcohol poisoning, was taken from his room there, to nearby Saint Vincent’s Hospital, where he died.

James Thurber

(1894-1961) Novelist. James Thurber lived on Horatio Street near 9th Avenue and 13th Street. He frequented the Algonquin Hotel. In 1994 the United States Postal Service issued its eleventh stamp in the Literary Arts series in honor of James Thurber.

Wallace Thurman

(1902-1934) African American fiction writer/editor. Wallace Thurman was born in Salt Lake City and lived in New York City.
