(1894-1967) Poet, novelist. “descended from a mixture…Scotch, Welsh, German,…and some dark blood” Jean Toomer wrote “Cane” (1923) a three part novel seen as ground-breaking and the start-off point for the Harlem Renaissance. He lived in New Rochelle and Harlem, New York City at different times in his life.

Nathan Pinchback Toomer (Jean Toomer) was born in Washington, District of Columbia in 1894.

Toomer moved to New Rochelle, New York when his mother remarried in 1906. He returned to Washington, District of Columbia after her death in 1909.
