Amelia Jenkins (Jenks) Bloomer

(1818-1894) Reformer. Amelia Jenks Bloomer was born in Homer, New York. She was editor of “Lily,” first published in Seneca Falls, New York, and a devotee of women’s rights and temperance.

Ned Buntline

(1823-1886) Editor, writer, author of over 400 “dime” novels. Ned Buntline was also known as Edward Zane Carroll Judson. He was born in Stamford, New York. In 1872, he persuaded W. F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) to act in his play “The Scouts of the Plains,” which started Cody on his stage career.

Blacksnake Blacksnake

(1760-1859) A Chief during the Revolutionary War, born in Cattaraugus, and a journal keeper. “Chain-Breaker: The Revolutionary War of Governor Blacksnake”–as told to Benjamin Williams–was the result of Blacksnake narrating stories and essays to Williams, an English speaking Seneca neighbor on the Allegany Reservation. (1841-1894) Writer. James Montgomery Bailey was born in Albany, New York. He moved to Danbury, Connecticut, in 1860 and, in addition to working as a carpenter, he wrote humorous articles for the local newspapers.
