Contact: Colleen Brown, 585-232-1366 X3057. Geva Theatre Center is Rochester’s leading professional theatre and the largest theatre in New York State outside of Manhattan. Founded in 1972, more than 165,000 people see plays at Geva each season, including more than 16,000 students. Ranging from world premieres to musicals to reinvigorated American and world classics, all of Geva’s productions are created and rehearsed in and for Rochester. Geva draws upon the talents of the actors, directors, designers and writers from around the country who are shaping the American theatre scene. Each year, Geva produces six plays on the Elaine P. Wilson Mainstage (552 seats), three plays on the Ron & Donna Fielding Nextstage (180 seats), plus A Christmas Carol, and two Big Theatre for Little People productions on the Nextstage. In addition to serving the Rochester community through its productions, Geva Theatre Center also offers a wide variety of educational, outreach and literary programs designed to: Enrich and deepen the theatre-going experience for our current audience, provide access and affordable theatre to the Rochester community including thousands of students, develop new plays and playwrights, nurture the audiences and artists of the next season. From the Mainstage to the Nextstage to the classroom and beyond, Geva Theatre Center is an active member of the Rochester cultural community, offering a multitude of opportunities for our community to get into the act. Geva Theatre Center is helping to shape the theatre of the 21st century through a variety of programs that nurture new works and the artists who create them. American Voices New Play Reading Series: plays are selected from a national pool of submissions, given five hours of rehearsal, and presented to the public in an informal reading format, with professional actors and directors. Each presentation is followed by a post-show discussion with the playwright. Hibernatus Interruptus Festival of New Plays: three plays are selected or commissioned by Geva Theatre Center, developed in several days of workshops with professional artists, then presented in script-in-hand performances before an audience. Regional Playwrights Festival: Plays by Rochester area writers, selected in cooperation with Writers & Books, are presented in a reading format and followed by post-show discussions with the playwright. Young Writers Festival: presented in tandem with Regional Playwrights Festival, the Young Writers Festival features short plays by writers aged 13-18. This event provides a rare opportunity for young writers to have their works performed by professional actors. Latter Day Playwrights Project: Geva collaborates with Writers & Books on this project that invites established writers from other genres to write short plays, which are then rehearsed by professional actors and directors and presented in script-in-hand performances.
