American Indian Artists Inc. (AMERINDA) is the only independent, multi-arts organization serving emerging and established Native artists in New York City and the surrounding northeast region. Founded in 1987, AMERINDA works within the Native American community: To empower Native Americans; Break down barriers; and Foster intercultural understanding and appreciation for Native culture. AMERINDA actively promotes the indigenous perspective in the arts to a wide audience through the creation of new work in contemporary art forms. AMERINDA supports Native American artists in pursuing professional literary careers through its publications. Genocide of the Mind: New Native American Writing, a creative non-fiction anthology of new American Indian writing edited by MariJo Moore(Cherokee), with a forward by the late distinguished elder and author, Vine Deloria, Jr. (Standing Rock Sioux) Published by Nations Books, the anthology is in its second printing. TALKING STICK Native Arts Quarterly, on-line and in print, publishes the work of emerging and established writers and poets; essays; and articles about issues that directly affect artists and their communities. Articles can be searched by title, author, and subject. Sovereign Bones, a second creative non-fiction anthology exploring the role that art has played in Native peoples holding onto their identity in the face of aggression and colonialism. The book is edited by Eric Gansworth(Onondaga) with a forward by prominent artist, elder and world spokesperson for the rights of indigenous people, Oren Lyons(Seneca). The book is published by Nation Books.
