Thomas Paine

(1737-1809) Political theorist and writer. Thomas Paine wrote the pamphlet “Common Sense” (1776), which encouraged independence from Great Britain and he also wrote the pamphlet series “The Crisis” (1776-83), encouraging the patriot cause during the Revolutionary War. Whitelaw Reid

(1837-1912) Journalist, editor. Whitelaw Reid was born in Cedarville, Ohio, and died in London, England. He was editor of the New York Tribune, and lived at Ophir Hall, Purchase Street, Purchase, New York, from 1866 to 1912.

Margaret Elizabeth Sangster

Poet, author, editor, writer of juvenile stories. She was born and raised in New Rochelle. She contributed pieces to such magazines as “Hearth and Home,” “Christian Intelligencer,” and “Harpers Bazaar,” as well as editing them.

Rose Hawthorne Lathrop

(1851-1926) Writer, editor. Rose Hawthorne Lathrop lived in Manhattan, New York, and died in Hawthorne, New York. She was Nathaniel Hawthorne’s daughter and was married to George Parsons Lathrop. Following her husband’s death, she became a nun and was known as Mother Mary Alphonsa.

Manfred Lee
