Bio
(1835-1925) Writer, historian, journalist. William Osborn Stoddard was born in Homer, New York. After his graduation from the University of Rochester in 1858, beginning in May 1859, he advocated Abraham Lincoln as a presidential candidate in the paper’s columns, and in 1860 he campaigned energetically on Lincoln’s behalf. From 1861 to 1864 he was one of Lincoln’s private secretaries, and from 1864 to 1866 he was United States marshal of Arkansas. His main books included “Abraham Lincoln” (1884), “Inside the White House in War Times” (1890), “The Table Talk of Lincoln” (1894), and over 75 books for boys, including “Little Smoke: A Tale of the Sioux” and “The Spy of Yorktown.”
