Bio

(1794-1878) Writer, poet, editor. William Cullen Bryant was born in Massachusetts. Mr. Bryant lived at 428-343 Lafayette Street and 24 West 16th Street in Manhattan, New York. Bryant became a recognized poet early in life, then was admitted to the bar in 1815. He practiced law in Massachusetts for ten years, then moved to New York City. He became associate editor of the “New York Evening Post” in 1826, and then became part owner and editor in chief in 1829. Cedermere House, where he lived from 1843 until his death in 1878, is located on Bryant Avenue in Roslyn Harbor, New York. (It is open weekends in May through early November. Admission is free.) He is buried in Roslyn Cemetery, Northern Boulevard, Greenvale, New York. Bryant Library, Paper Mill Road has a collection of Bryant’s manuscripts. Bryant Park, behind the main branch of the New York Public Library, was named after him.
