(1865-1909) Playwright. Born in Elmira. Extremely prolific playwright and novelist. He wrote over 36 original plays, including melodramas, farces, social comedies, and historical dramas. His work serves as an important critical bridge between 19th century melodrama and the realistic drama of the early 20th century. Notable works: “Nathan Hale” (1898), “The Climbers” (1901), “The Girl with the Green Eyes” (1902), etc.
