(1928-1984) Walter Tevis was born in San Francisco, California and died in New York City, New York. He wrote seven novels, three of which were the basis for major motion pictures. He also wrote thirteen short stories. In 1978 Tevis moved to New York City to continue his writing.

It was the basis for the 20th Century Fox Film of the same name, directed and produced in 1961 by Robert Rossen. This novel was part of the Fast Eddie Felson series which included one other novel, The Color of Money, published in 1984.
