Sholem Asch was born in Kutno, Poland in 1880.

This drama was set in a brothel and dealt with a lesbian relationship. When the show was performed on Broadway in 1923 the entire cast was arrested and prosecuted for obscenity.

Asch traveled to the US for the first time in 1910. He returned to the states to wait out World War I. He became a naturalized citizen in 1920.
