Bio

(1859-1916) Novelist, playwright. Sholem Aleichem was born in Russia, lived his last years in the United States and died in New York City. Throughout his life, he wrote novels, short stories, and plays, all exclusively in Yiddish. The musical “Fiddler on the Roof” is based on some of his short stories. He was the father of the writer, Lyalya Kaufman, and the grandfather of the novelest, Bel Kaufman.

Sholem Rabinowitz (Sholem Aleichem) was born in Russia near Kiev, Ukraine in 1859.

1914

RESIDENCE

Aleichem and most of his family emmigrated to New York City in 1914. His last home was 968 Kelly Street in the Bronx, New York.

DEATH

Sholem Aleichem died in New York City in 1916 at the age of 57.

INTERMENT

Sholem Aleichem was interred in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Glendale, Queens County, New York. At the time of his funeral it was one of the largest New York City had ever seen with 100,000 mourners attending.
