Bio

Shirley Powell was born in Ohio and moved to New York City in 1971, during the Women’s Movement. She coordinated a feminist reading group at New York University in the early 70’s and compiled an anthology of their poetry: Womansong, published by The Poet’s Press. After her novel Running Wild was published by Avon Books in 1981, she moved to Ulster County, New York, and is currently living in Kingston, New York. She teaches writing workshops and literature at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She led The Stone Ridge Poetry Society for 13 years, and was editor of its magazine, Oxalis, from its beginning in 1988 to its demise six years and 23 issues later, in 1994. She has had several books of poetry published between 1975 and 2001. Her selected works, Other Rooms, The Poet’s Press, was done in 1998.
