BIRTH

Edward Howard Duncan, Jr. was born in Oakland, California, in 1919. He was adopted in 1920 and renamed Robert Edward Symmes. In 1941 he changed his name to Robert Edward Duncan.

1940

RESIDENCE

Duncan moved to Woodstock, New York, in about 1940 and lived there briefly on a commune run by James Cooney. He worked on Cooney's magazine "The Phoenix."
