Bio

(1758-1830) Seneca Indian chief. Red Jacket was born near Geneva, New York in either Seneca or Ontario County. As a Seneca chief he became well-known for his skill as a politician and orator. He got the name Red Jacket for the British officers coat he wore during the American Revolution. Though a relative of Handsome Lake he disagreed with the New Religion. He was the grandfather of Ely S. Parker and the subject of several books and biographies. His speeches have been transcribed and published.
