(1946-2008) Journalist, writer. Nancy Hicks Maynard was born in Harlem, Manhattan, New York, in 1946. She was the first black woman to be a reporter at The New York Times and she and her husband bought and published The Oakland Tribune. She died in Los Angeles, California, in 2008.
