Bio
(1894-1972/73) Poet, writer, critic. Mark Van Doren graduated with a Ph.D. from Columbia in 1920, and became assistant professor of English and went on to teach as a professor from 1942 to 1959. His pupils include John Berryman, Thomas Merton, Allen Ginsberg, and Lionel Trilling. He was also on the staff of the “Nation” from 1924-36. With his brother Carl Van Doren he wrote “American and British Literature since 1890” (1939). He wrote critical studies of Dryden, Hawthorne, and other authors; compiled anthologies; collected his lectures for publication; wrote poetry, novels, and plays; lived at 393 Bleecker Street, was responsible for the building of the Bleecker Gardens; and won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1939.
