(1887-1964) Writer. Lyalya Kaufman was born in Belaya Tserkov, near Kiev, Russia, and died in New York City. She was the eldest daughter of Sholem Aleichem and mother of the novelest, Bel Kaufman. She contributed about 2,000 of her short stories to the Jewish Daily Forward.
