Bio

(1697-1746) Writer, journalist, editor. Born in Germany, John Peter Zenger came to America when he was 20 and became a printer’s apprentice. In 1733 he began publishing the New York Weekly Journal. He was arrested for printing stories critical of the governor and influencing public opinion against the government. His acquittal is considered the first, and one of the greatest, victories for freedom of press in USA.
