Bio

(1843-1916) Major American novelist, critic. Son of Henry James, Sr., and brother of William James. Henry James, Jr. was born at 21 Washington Place, Greenwich Village, New York, New York, and spent a part of his boyhood in Albany, New York. Privately educated, he entered Harvard Law School in 1862. He was encouraged to write critical articles and reviews for the Atlantic Monthly. After traveling in Europe, he settled permanently in London and wrote such novels as “The American” (1877), “The Portrait of a Lady” (1881), “The Turn of the Screw” (1898), and “The Golden Bowl”(1904). The United States Postal Service honored Henry James in 2016 with the issuance of its thirty-first stamp in the Literary Arts series.
