Bio

(c.1838-1886) Poet. Father Abram Joseph Ryan was a Southerner to the core in spite of his Irish heritage and Northern upbringing, Father Ryan enlisted in the Confederate Army on September 1, 1862, and served as a chaplain , carrying the wounded to safety and performing last rites on the battlefield. His first piece of poetry was inspired by the death of a younger brother in action, and he quickly became known as the “Poet-Priest of the Confederacy.”

DEATH

Fr. Abram Joseph Ryan died in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1886. Saint Boniface Church, 531 East Liberty Street, Louisville, Kentucky 40202, has a plaque on the front commemorating the site where Father Ryan died.

Father Abram Ryan was interred in the Catholic Cemetery, Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama.
