Bio
(1878-1937) Humorous short-story writer, poet. In Atlanta, Georgia, Marquis first wrote for the “Constitution” (1902) and “The Uncle Remus Magazine” (1907-1909). He then went to New York, where he became famous for his columns “The Sun Dial” for the “Sun” (1912-1922) and “The Lantern” for the “Tribune” (1922-1925). He created the characters Captain Fitzurse, Clem Hawley, and Hermione and her Little Group of Serious Thinkers. His famous book “archy and mehitabel” (1927) collects his whimsical stories about a cockroach and a cat. He lived in Queens and Manhattan.
