Bio
Writer, lawyer, abolitionist. Practiced law in Cherry Valley. In 1832 he moved to Utica and continued his practice, but gave a lot of his attention to the temperance and anti-slavery causes. In 1835 he organized an anti-slavery convention in Utica which formed the New York State Anti-Slavery Society. He delivered many speeches on the topic of abolition. Among his most famous speeches was one delivered in 1845 before the Supreme Court of New Jersey, pleading the unconstitutionality of slavery. His speeches were edited and published by L.R. Marsh under the title “Writings and Speeches of Alvan Stewart on Slavery” (1860).
