Bio

Historian. Lawrence W. Levine was born in Manhattan, New York in 1933. Mr Levine was a graduate of, and taught briefly at, the City University of New York. He died in California in 2006. Works include, “The Opening of the American Mind: Canons, Culture and History” (1996), “Black Culture and Black Consciousness: Afro-American Folk Thought from Slavery to Freedom” (1977), “Highbrow/Lowbrow: The Emergence of Cultural Hierarchy in America” (1988), and “The Unpredictable Past: Explorations in American Cultural History” (1993).
