Denise Levertov

Bio

(1923-1997) Politically active poet. Denise Levertov published her first book of poems in England in 1946. She married and moved to America in 1947, and settled in New York City in 1948. She lived at 52 Barrow Street and 727 Greenwich Street, both in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York. She also lived at 299 West 15th Street. She officially became a US citizen in 1955. She was involved with the Black Mountain poets with Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, Robert Duncan, and she fostered a friendship with William Carlos Williams. In the 1960s she was poetry editor for “The Nation” and the 1970s she was poetry editor for “Mother Jones.” Though raised in Britain, she is widely considered an American poet known for her political and social consciousness.
