Bio

(1816-1878) Editor, publisher, biographer. From 1848 to 1853, he and his brother George Long Duyckinck (1823-63) owned and edited the “Literary World,” the best literary weekly of the period. With George he also edited and prepared much of the copy for the “Cyclopedia of American Literature” (2 vols., 1855), which was a standard work for its time. Evert also offered his house as site for gatherings of many literary types, including Herman Melville (who received much support from Duyckinck), William Cullen Bryant, Margaret Fuller, Edgar Allan Poe, etc.
