Bio
(1914-1953) Poet. Julia De Burgos was born in Puerto Rico. She was a militant member of the Nationalist Party. She published two collections of poems: “Poema En Veinte Zurcos” and “Cancion De La Verdad Sencilla.” She lived in New York City for a short time in 1940 and then went to Cuba. She moved to New York City permanently in 1942. Her posthumous “Obra Poetica” contains all her poetry. Julia De Burgos died, literally forgotten and unknown, on a street in Harlem, Manhattan, New York, in 1953. In 2010 the United States Postal Service issued its 27th stamp in the Literary Arts series in honor of Julia De Burgos.
