She was baptized at Grace Church, and later lived at 7 Washington Square North in Manhattan, New York. She was a major novelist known for her remarkable handling of turn of the century New York society. In 1980 the United States Postal Service issued its second stamp in the Literary Arts series in honor of Edith Wharton.
