Philip Barry

Bio

Playwright. Born in Rochester. After graduating from Yale in 1919, Barry worked with George Pierce Baker at the famous 47 Dramatic Workshop at Harvard until 1922. In the next 20 years, Barrys plays were produced on the New York stage. Among the more successful plays are “Holiday” (1929), “Hotel Universe” (1930), “Tomorrow and Tomorrow” (1931), and “The Animal Kingdom” (1932). In 1938 Barry wrote a novel “War in Heaven” which he also dramatized as “Here Come the Clowns” (1938). “The Philadelphia Story” (1939) was a hit, and was later translated to the silver screen. Other plays are “Liberty Jones” (1940), “Without Love” (1942), and “Foolish Nation” (1944).
