(1820-1906) Reformer, editor, publisher. Susan B. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts. She received her education in rural Monroe County, New York where she began teaching in 1846. She helped launch the Women’s State Temperance Society of New York in 1852, which brought her into the women’s suffrage movement. In 1868, with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, she published “The Revolution,” a paper dedicated to the emancipation of women. In 1872, she got into considerable trouble at the State and Congressional election in Rochester, New York when she attempted to cast a ballot to test the legality of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Voting being a right not extended to women at the time, she was indicted for illegal voting and fined, but the fine was never exacted. In 1881 she wrote “The History of Woman Suffrage”. She was also a delegate to the International Council of Women in London, England in 1899.
